After the wedding ceremony and the reception, most brides and grooms are ready to settle in for their wedding night. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always go as planned. Friends and families sometimes plan activities that makes the wedding night uneventful for the newlyweds. Every culture and country has its own views on how to upset the couple and how their wedding night should go.
In the United States, it is common for the newlyweds to get into their vehicle and head to their honeymoon after the reception. They often find that the back bumper of their car is fully equipped with dozens of tin cans, that must be removed so they are not pulled over by a police officer who is having a bad day. Thus, this manages to ruin “the mood” and just end up being aggravating for every anxious couple.
In Gaelic culture, family and close friends try anything possible to delay the newlyweds in consummating their marriage. Back in the day, the newly married couple would head to the hay barn and spend their wedding night there. The brides women friends would get her ready for bed by dressing her in the appropriate fashion. Every male species that was invited to the wedding would then show up to have the chance to kiss her good night. Then they would make as much noise as possible when the couple finally started to make love. The Gaelics would yell and bang on everything possible to embarrass the new couple. Fortunately for the couple, the alcohol would soon start to work its magic and they would be left in peace. No wonder they kept their honeymoon location a secret.
West Africa has a different type of tradition for a couples wedding night. Virginity is worth the same as gold in West Africa. If the bride has been untouched and has saved herself for marriage, her mother will offer her money. Alarmingly, sometimes the wedding sheets were checked for blood the morning after the wedding night. This is the custom in Benin to make sure the bride was true. In a few cases, the sheets are flown out in the open to show that a families daughter didn’t give in to temptation until her wedding night.
In Marquesasian, Polynesia, brides are expected to make love to every male guest invited to the ceremony on the wedding night. It is an extreme pain if there are a large number of male guests. The groom must wait until every male has had his turn in order to sleep with the bride. Unfortunately, this could go on for some time before the groom gets his chance. It must be worth it though, since he will have her the rest of their life together.
